Crawford College of Art & Design ran its first Art Therapy Summer School in 1992. Over the ensuing years the college has established a strong Art Therapy programme in the Adult Education Department. The Department of Art Therapy & Continuing Visual Education now provides opportunities for experiencing, learning about and, ultimately, training in the Art Therapy process, in addition to other visual development courses. Pioneering art therapy training in Ireland, the Summer School was quickly followed by the Art Therapy Foundation Certificate. 1998 saw the first intake of Postgraduate Art Therapy students. This professional training course was the first of its kind in Ireland and in 2006 the MA programme in Art Therapy began.
The Certificate in Arts & Empowerment Practice, with a more community art remit, was established in 1996. In 2009 the Art Therapy Foundation Course and the Arts & Empowerment Course became accredited HETAC level 8 modules. To reflect this their names were changed to Principles of Art Therapy Certificate and Arts in Group Facilitation Certificate respectively. We also now offer another HETAC level 8 module, Arts, Participation & Development in Global Education.
Since 2002 we have run a number of Art Therapy introductory weekends, and more recently introductory days, to meet the huge demand from people wanting to experience the Art Therapy process.
The Department of Art Therapy & Continuing Visual Education is committed to providing creative educational training through experiential workshops, backed up by seminars and lectures. It is actively involved in developing the quality and educational standing of its courses.
